Pinky, Is it better to excell at something specific, or is it better to be a Renaissance person? Signed, Unsure how many L's in Excell Well, darling, first things first. If we must choose, it is better to be able to spell Renaissance correctly (which you did) than excel (which you did not). Kudos! Next, and this is really deep, so brace yourself, it is my impression that one cannot excel at any discipline in a vacuum (Vacuum is a word I learned to spell early on - it blew my mind, as I had assumed it would be spelled vacume, and I remember staring at my 2nd grade teacher as if she were a total idiot for correcting me. I still disagree with the whole UU thing. Double U is a letter, not a spelling choice.) In any event, my point is being a Renaissance person will enrich whatever it is you strive to perfect. If you are, say, a musician, a knowledge of poetry will lend depth to your sense of rhythm (robin hood yells to his men, for those of you with spelling difficulties). An understanding of African tribal lore will deepen your sense of the rich tapestry of percussion as language. A study of American history will inspire you to be brave and take risks and write well. The theories of Freud, Jung, Foucault, and Lacan will help you to unlock the mysterious beauty of the symbols in your dreams to make better music. Plus, nobody wants to sleep with some Johnny one-note, and that is the crux of the matter. Yours, pinky posted by pinky 11:00 AM
