We live in Chicago now. The trip was sort of weirdly great. First, the packing, which was hellish but had guides and spirits along the way, who did befriend us (Name that song and win a cotton candy goat!) Sara got us to Jersey and lent us her car so Connie and I could run 80 errands throughout our former borough - she running, me driving. Lisa provided last minute packing ignition while I had like a minor stroke or something, then the valiant packers showed up the next morning - -Alex, Danyon, Eliott, Amo, Sara, surprise guest Jy Murphy to just pack that truck like a bunch of motherfuckers and send us on our way - to Orange, NJ. Briefly considered just moving to Orange, NJ, and being done with it. But, no. 280 became 80, and the broad, shouldered roads of PA opened up to us, all misty mountain majesty and the like. Briefly considered moving to the Delaware Water Gap. Ohio charmed and soothed, then awed with a spectacular thunderstorm, lightning peeling all the way across the big empty sky like it only does in the midwest. An evening in cosmopolitan Sandusky, OH, and then on. Dexter had a considerably less enjoyable trip than I, let's just put it that way. I've seen happier cats being vivisected. Then on to Indiana loveliness, plain cornfields and puffy sky, but asshole drivers. And then we sailed into Chicago and came to a dead stop for about an hour and a half. Harleys everywhere all along the way, smiling and headed to the party, literally, of the century. Then home, to our lakey, leafy, breezy spot and a vast array of smiling welcomers (Katie, Ellie, FL, Agatha, Phil, James, Mom) who unpacked that truck like a bunch of motherfuckers, and, um, mothers. Thanks, Mom. And a new old purple car for me - I have never had a car before, and never imagined my first would be a purple ford escort. I think I am going to rename the make and model instead of giving it an additional name. Any suggestions? Something like, "The Mallacca Emperion". The apartment? It's pretty, the phone doesn't work, we are alone here with a cat alternately hiding in the pantry or sprawling in the hallway. We have cable. Will we make it? What will happen? Where are we? My gosh.
